What is the Urban Forest Management Plan?

The Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) is a community-wide planning process which will be jointly led by a consultant (Davey Resource Group) and City staff. The UFMP will set the City's priorities for the management, protection, and promotion of the urban forest.

About the Project

The planning process for the UFMP will include:

  • Multiple opportunities for public input and participation (see Timeline for specific dates)
  • A canopy cover assessment to determine the extent of the urban forest
  • A strategic planning process that will identify City-wide goals for the urban forest
  • Consultation with experts in urban forestry to determine the most effective methods to help the City reach its urban forest goals
  • A set of priorities for future City programs and regulations based on the latest science and best management practices
  • Bringing together urban forest management-related activities across City departments within an overarching set of goals and priorities

The City has contracted with the Davey Resource Group to serve as the primary consultant on the Urban Forest Management Plan. Davey Resource Group has completed similar plans in cities throughout Washington, Colorado, and California. More information can be found here

The City has received a $15,000 grant for the first stage of this project: the canopy cover assessment. The grant funds will be provided by the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program, administered through the State of Washington Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Program.
