The primary focus of this position is to assist in the implementation of the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan and Trails, Bikeways and Paths Master Plan, by managing the planning, design and construction of parks & recreation capital development projects. The position also assists in long-range planning of parks and recreation facilities, open space and trails in the City of Sammamish and adjacent jurisdictions.

Because of the small size of the City staff, each staff member is expected to perform a wide range of field and office duties from time to time. Provide overall management and direction to the Recreation Division, the Volunteer Division and the Health and Wellness Division, supervision of staff and recreation programs; oversight of facility use and rental program; management of contracts, community partnerships and Division budget. This position will staff the City’s Arts Commission and support the City’s Youth Board.  This position is responsible for supervising full-time, part-time and seasonal staff and volunteers.  Employment with the City of Sammamish is at-will.

This is a professional planning position, focusing on current planning, comprehensive (long range) planning or special projects planning. While primary responsibilities lie in current planning, the work is not limited exclusively to any one area. Therefore, the position requires a broad range of knowledge and experience in the planning field. Work requires occasional contact with the City Council, and frequent contact with the Planning Commission, City Hearing Examiner and representatives of other City departments and divisions, land developers and their agents, and the general public to provide information and advice on sensitive community issues.

This position is also responsible for administration and implementation of the City’s code compliance process as described in Sammamish Municipal Code (SMC) Title 23.  This includes managing all investigations of alleged violations of City land use, environmental, surface water, nuisance ordinances, policies and rules.  The Building Official and the Code Compliance Officer will work closely together to carry out the provisions of the Title.


Work is under the general supervision of the Deputy Director of Community Development and the Building Official. Will work independently in public contact, hearing and meeting, and field situations. Will exercise substantial independent judgment regarding project management.


The position may provide guidance, consultation and indirect supervision of one or more Associate Planners. There may be occasional supervision of planning interns, temporary employees, and oversight of consultants for specific tasks.
